It's a Trap!
Chomp chomp chomp! Imagine what a nightmare it would be if the plants around us suddenly turned carnivorous, Can you imagine being chased by killer tomatoes? How about a giant sunflower nibbling on your toes? Thankfully, these do not happen in real life. But there are fascinating examples of plants that make animals their dinner. They are carnivorous plants.
Plants make their own food However, they through the process of photosynthesis. However, they also require other nutrients from the soil too. However, they have also found other ways of getting these nutrients. The extra nutrition they need comes in the form of unfortunate flies, ants, spiders and other bugs. Urgh!
Carnivorous plants have special leaves which help them capture their meaty meals. The plants often lure their insects victims with their smell, colour or sweet nectar. Insects are hence attracted to their doom. Some plants have leaves with sticky hairs to trap their lunch. Other plants have leaves shaped into tiny jars. These jars contain digestive fluid to drown insects.
The Venus Fly Trap is probably the best know carnivorous plant. With its alien-like appearance, this fascinating has captured the imagination of many people. In fact, many movies and cartoons have been made about this famous plant.
To attract insects, the Venus Fly Trap produces sweet-smelling nectar. Each trap is formed by a leaf which has two lobes. There are trigger hairs on each lobe. If a fly lands on the leaf and disturbs the trigger hairs, the trap snaps shut! The stiff lobes, together with the spines on their edges, help to crush the insect's body while digestive juices dissolve it.
After the trap has had three or four yummy victims, the trap usually withers. We therefore should not trigger the trap repeatedly just for fun as the traps and eventually the plant, will die.
