Fruity Fruity Fruit Juice
Introduction:
If you have bought fruit juice from a drinks stall or fruit stall before, then you would most definitely have seen this fairly large and noisy blending machine that turn your fruits into fruit juice. This conventional method is both tiring and troublesome. Not only do we have to press the fruits which accumulate in the machine when the fruits are blended. In this experiment, we will be using an easier way to get your fruit juice. We will not be using machine, but instead enzyme solution.
Aim: To use different solutions to extract fruit juice and find out the most effective method.
Material:
- Four 100cm3 Beakers (Labeled P, A, C, D)
- Filter Funnel
- 4 Filter Papers
- 4 Measuring Cylinder
- 1 spatula of Pectinase Enzyme (P)
- 1 spatula of Amylase Enzyme (A)
- 1 spatula of Cellulase Enzyme (C)
- 5 cm3 Distilled Water (D)
- 4 Droppers
- 4 Oranges
- Blender
- Stop Watch
- Glass Rod
Procedure:
1. Blend an orange using the blender
2. Pour the blended orange juice into one of the beakers. Repeat this for the other 3 oranges.
3. Label the beakers (P, A, C, D)
4. Add 1 spatula of each enzyme into their corresponding beakers (P, A, C) and 5cm3 of distilled water (without enzyme) into the beaker labeled D.
5. Stir the contents in each beaker with a glass rod and leave it to stand for a few minutes.
6. Fold a piece of filter paper and put it into a filter funnel. Place the filter funnel on a measuring cylinder.
7. Filter the contents of one of the beakers by pouring them into the funnel.
8. Record the volume of juice collected in the measuring cylinder.
9. Repeat steps 6 to 8 for the other 3 beakers.
In Beaker P, we can find the largest volume of orange juice as Pectinase Enzyme break down the cell walls of oranges’ cells, releasing more orange juice inside the cells. In the factory, they used enzymes to produce more fruit juice.
